The institute was established as the College of Engineering & Technology Delhi in 1961. Its foundation stone was laid by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and was inaugurated by Prof. Humayun Kabir, the then Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs on August 21, 1961. In 1963 the Parliament of India passed an amendment to the Institutes of Technology Act and recognized the institute as Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
