NITIE was established in 1962 by the Government of India with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) through the International Labour Organization. Steve Dembicki, who was a Chief advisor at ILO, and Vikram Sarabhai were instrumental in founding the institute. Its first on-site Director was Vinayak S. Vernekar who had previously worked at TISCO in Jamshedpur. [1]
The institute in its initial days was spread across the country with knowledge centres situated at Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi. These institutes were known for their extensive research and consulting engagements in the area of Operation Research, Logistics and Labour Management.[citation needed] But gradually during the late 80s all of these nodal centres were shutdown and a single centre was groomed which is currently located at Mumbai.
