Sagada National High School
- Address: Sagada, Mountain Province, Philippines 2619
- Website: [1]
History
The Sagada National High School was created by virtue of RA No. 8868 authored by then Congresswoman Josephine DC Dominguez. It was signed into law by President Fidel V. Ramos in the year 2000. The school became fully nationalized two years later when the General Appropriation Act was implemented.
Prior to its nationalization, the school was annexed with the Bangaan National High School for four years when it was established in 1996.
The Sagada National High School is located within the compound of the Sagada Central School in Bomabanga, Poblacion, Sagada. It is 100m from the Municipal Building and it is accessible through pathway that cut across Barangay Patay. A pathway from the Sagada-Besao road above the school is an alternate route to the school.
The school is located at the heart of Poblacion, Sagada Mt. Province. The town of Sagada is approximately 151 Km away from the City of Baguio. It is a popular mountain resort which is a haven for both foreign and local tourists. The Sagada National High School, a public school is a couple of blocks away from the century old Saint Mary’s School now Saint Mary’s School of Sagada, Inc.
The school stands atop the Bomabanga Hill overlooking the majestic rice terraces of Barangay Demang including the hills that surround it. It towers over central zone barangays like Poblacion, Dagdag, Demang and Ambasing. Having no building of its own, it “squats” at the bayanihan buildings within the compound of the Sagada Central School. The school used to be an annex of the Bangaan National High School until it became a national high school by virtue of RA 8868 which took effect in the year 2000.
The fledgling school started to operate in 1996 after an incessant lobbying by some concern parents in the community. These hard driven parents dreamed of a free secondary education at the center of the town as mandated by the Philippine Constitution. Their dream came true when the Department of Education approved the request to open a new school. To solve the problem of who will teach, the Bangaan National High School under Mr. John Guitilen and the Ankileng National High School under the late Mr. Albert Bangsail Sr. readily lent three teachers each to commute to teach the pioneer students. When it became clear that BNHS will annex the new school, ANHS withdrew its teachers. Being the mother school BNHS sent a couple of more teachers and designated Mr. James Lonogan as the first teacher-in –Charge. As the years passed, more students enrolled. To solve the problem of lack of teachers, the PTCA engaged the services of three teachers whom they paid through contribution from the parents.
With sixty five (65) students to start with, the population of the school kept steadily increasing over the years with an annual average increase of 28% since its inception. It held its first graduation in the year 2000 with fifty-six (56) pioneer students who graduated. Many of them are now young professionals.
In 1997, the DPWH started to construct a six room two-storey school building below the playground of SCS. The fund came from the Countrywide Development Fund of the then Congressman Victor Dominguez. Then in 2006, DepEd allotted one million pesos for its continuation and the flooring of the first floor was finished. Then the Provincial Government allotted another one million pesos that enclosed and partitioned the first storey. The following year, Sagada LGU, under the leadership of the then Mayor Roberto Baaten, allotted another 1.5 million that finished the second floor that entitled the school for three decent rooms. In May 2010, Philippine Cordillerans (PhilCor) NSW Australia, Department of Education-Mountain Province and the members of the school's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) pooled resources together to finish the first floor. Now, all the six rooms of the High School building are liveable.
To date, the school still faces development problems – the lack of basic school facilities like science laboratory rooms and equipment,a library , and a wider school ground. Permanent Teachers are likewise an immediate need. With meager help from the government, but with the PTA behind us, we are slowly addressing the problem one at a time.
In spite of these limitations, students continue to flock at SNHS as it continues to wade into the educational waters. For the school year 2011-2012, the school has a total enrollment of 250 and is manned by 9 permanent teachers and two volunteer teachers. Together, the school's mission is uphold.
Buildings

The construction started with P 10,000 pesos donated by Mr. Lonogan. The student body led by Sarah Kyrsten Dalang the SSG class 2000 President helped in sourcing out funds through fund raising campaign. This pioneer class work together to start the construction. The completion of the building was then continued following the years thereafter. The first floor now houses the Smartschools computer laboratory. The second floor is the faculty room.In August 2010, a grant from Korea through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) refurbished the computer laboratory with new sets of computers, along with the improvement of the faculty room.
