Bramalea Secondary School (nicknamed BSS) is a high school located in Brampton, Ontario. The current principal is Ms. Topping. It operates under the Peel District School Board. As of September 2005, the school consisted of 487 first year students, 467 in their second year, 489 in their third, 308 in their fourth, and 8 in their fifth. Of that, 290 students were in Extended French and 20 took the bus.[1]
On Friday, December 10, 2004, B.S.S. lost one of its E.S.L. teachers, Aysegul Candir. A fatal shooting occurred in the parking lot just after 11am. Her estranged husband tracked her down and shot her while she was walking towards the school. The school was in lockdown mode for nearly 4 hours while Peel Regional Police S.W.A.T. teams searched the school for the shooter. However, the shooter had never entered the school and was caught in his home later that day. On April 2, 2007, Erhun Candir, the deceased's estranged husband, was convicted of the shooting and received life in jail for the murder of Mrs. Candir. He cannot seek parole for 25 years or until he is 88, although under Canada's 'faint hope clause', he may be eligible for parole after 15 years. His lawyer, Michael A. Moon, has commenced an appeal of the case[1]
