The possibility of the formation of a Catholic University in Indonesia was first raised in Jakarta in June 1952. The first Catholic Universities in Indonesia were established in 1955 in Bandung (Parahyangan Catholic University) and Yogyakarta (Sanata Dharma University). [1]

The Atma Jaya Institute in Jakarta was established by a group of Catholic intellectuals on the 1st June 1960. The Institute established a Catholic institution of higher learning called the Atma Jaya Indonesian Catholic University. The university is one of the few lay Catholic universities in Asia. [1]
