On January 31, 2001, Kadena students became involved in the 2001 Japan Airlines mid-air incident. 13 students boarded Japan Airlines Flight 907, bound for Naha International Airport in Naha, Okinawa from Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) in Ōta, Tokyo, Japan, after returning from a school-sanctioned ROTC competition. The pilot of the Boeing 747-400 used for Flight 907 dived to avoid a Japan Airlines Douglas DC-10, and the 747 returned to Tokyo with some injured passengers. Two students from Michigan, United States, 15-year old Meggan Wesche and 14-year old Allison Ambrose, sustained some minor injuries and became hospitalized for a short time. The students left Tokyo on another Japan Airlines flight the following day and arrived in Okinawa. Parents collected the students at Kadena High School. [1]
