- History
- According to local legends, the town of Bacolor was founded in 1576 by a landlord named Guillermo Manabat. In the same year, it was accepted as a convent by the Augustinian council and was called San Guillermo. During the British occupation in 1762 to 1764, Bacolor was the seat of the government in exile led by Gov. General Simon de Anda who established his residence in the Augustinian convent. It is said that the present church must have been built before 1645, including the convent. At present the church is famous after being featured in a TV show and stands as a testament to the resiliency of the Kapampangans after surviving lahar flows which buried almost half of the structure. distinctive baroque elements still remain in its facade, as in the interplay of curves in the windows of both the church and the hexagonal bell tower. the retablo which was gilded with goldleaf had been extensively restored.
