Mapúa Institute of Technology (MIT, Mapúa Tech or simply Mapúa) is a private, non-sectarian, Filipino tertiary institute located in Intramuros, Manila and in Makati. ^[1]

It was founded by the first registered Filipino architect, Don Tomás Mapúa in 1925, a graduate of Cornell University. After he died, the tradition was continued by his children, Don Óscar B. Mapúa Sr., a graduate in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Gloria Mapúa-Lim. ^[1]

The Institute is a reputable source of architects, engineers, and science graduates and constantly produces top notchers in the architectural and engineering fields as the Mapúa Institute of Technology heavily specializes in these fields in the undergraduate and graduate levels, aside from its widening array of undergraduate programs such as Computer Science, Multimedia Arts and Sciences, Information Technology, Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Business Management, Hotel & Restaurant Management, and Nursing. ^[1]

The Institute has been granted with the Level IV Accredited Status to its Civil Engineering program by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA), which is one of the first engineering programs to be accorded such status. In addition, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) recently recognized Mapúa’s Mechanical Engineering (ME), Computer Engineering (CpE) and Electronics Engineering (ECE) programs as Centers of Development for Engineering (COD). ^[1]

Mapua is also the first Philippine and Southeast Asian educational institution to have ABET certification, rendering the Institute to be at par with US-based colleges and universities. ^[1]

History & Memorable Moments

• The institute was started on January 25, 19-25, by Tomás Mapua, a graduate of Cornell University as well as the Filipino architect and Gonzalo T. Vales. At first, the institute provided architecture and civil engineering plans. In Doroteo Jose Road, the Mapúan Institute of Technology Pre-Engineering High School was established in 1928 through Rizal Avenue Sta.

During World War II, Mapúa's Intramuros Campus was used as a garrison by the Japanese forces during the occupation of Manila, and all lessons and organizations were suspended. As the work of the Institute to continue the studies of the students were suspended the Institute would continue to experience through the war and pupils were compelled to graduate. Throughout the liberation, the Institute suffered complete destruction in 1945. As part of the rehabilitation program, the Deluxe Trend School in Doroteo José was obtained and housed the high school division in 1948. Tomás Mapúa died on December 22, 1965 and his son Óscar Sr. took over the presidency until his death in 1998.

• Tomás Mapúa's grandson, Oscar Mapúan Jr., took over his responsibilities until December 1999, when the Mapúa family sold the institute to the Yuchengco Group of Companies (YGC) headed by Alfonso T. Reynaldo B was appointed by Yuchengco and. Vea as president.

• In 2002, the aged RCBC Building in Sen. Gil Puyat Ave. In Makati Town was purchased and converted to the Mapúa Makati Campus, where the School of I T was moved in the Intramuros Campus. • Starting 2002, the Quarterm Program was, which originally semestral, pioneered by Mapúa. This new system allows pupils to graduate faster (e.g. the unique 5-year engineering programs might be taken in four years) and also to focus on less, interrelated course topics in an 11-week phrase. On 2005, Mapúa High-School was closed down on the other hand, because it had been operated in debt. In addition to the establishment of the Malayan Senior School of Science and Malayan Colleges Laguna, the Administration intends to include all its educational establishments underneath the title Malayan Schools, to be later pushed through to university position as is beneath the Eyesight 20 20 initiative with Mapúan Institute of Engineering as the College of Engineering.
