The airline was established in September 1995 by the Airline Employees Cooperative (36 Filipino nationals, mostly former Philippine Airlines employees). It started operations in April 1996 and its first routes were from Manila to the present-day towns of San Jose, Malay (serving Boracay), Virac, Daet, Tablas, and the cities of Cauayan and Masbate . Towns and cities serviced by the airline are usually regarded as secondary and tertiary routes, which are usually not serviced by major airlines.[1]
Asian Spirit has the distinction of being the first scheduled airline to serve Boracay. Other operators serve the airport on charter basis then. It became the Philippines's fourth flag carrier (after Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines) in 2003. Asian Spirit flies to Palau , Micronesia, three times weekly from Cebu.[1]
