The plans for Brookwood High School were started in 1977 to lessen the overcrowding of nearby high schools of South Gwinnett and Parkview. A committee of educators from Gwinnett County met together to create and discuss specifications for the facility. The school officially opened in 1981 under the leadership of principal Emmett Lawson. Recently, former principal Jane Stegall ended her teaching and administration career in May 2007, retiring at the end of the month. [1]
The school derived its name literally from its location on the intersection of Holly Brook Road and Dogwood Road. Recently the school has celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special dance, chorus, and orchestra concert. [1]
