The institute was conceived by the government of India in 1985 as a tribute to Sant Longowal (Harchand Singh Longowal). The institute was established by Ministry Of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) in 1989 and was formally inaugurated on 20 December 1991.It was made a deemed to be university by UGC in the month of April 2007. ^[1]
