The Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) is a premier engineering institute located in Chennai, India. It is one of the four independent constituent colleges of the Anna University. It was started in the year 1949 by Mr.C.Rajam. The Institute was at that time a bold experiment in technical education', for it introduced for the first time totally new areas of specialization such as Aeronautical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Electronics Engineering and Instrumentation Technology. Now, it also provides technical education in other engineering fields such as Rubber & Plastic technology, Production technology & Information Technology. The broad-based education, coupled with practice-oriented training in their speciality, has enabled the students of MIT to handle with skill and success a wide variety of technical problems. The MIT has developed into an important centre of engineering education and earned an excellent reputation both in India and abroad. The institute focused on niche courses from its very inception. It was the first institute in India to have specialised courses (Electronics Engineering, Automobile Engineering & Aeronautical Engineering). It is also the only college in India that offers a Post Graduate Engineering degree in Avionics. It is also the first Indian institution to offer a Post Graduate degree in Mechatronics, started in the year 1999. Computer Sciences & Information Technology were started recently, keeping in mind the increased demand for IT courses in India. Admission into the institute previously was through the TNPCEE . But from 2007 onwards it was decided that the 12th grade examinations would be the sole criterion. The institute used to attract the top talent in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. But sadly this is not the case these days. On the bright side placements are near 100%. The student body of one of India’s most prestigious institutes–Madras Institute of Technology, Athenaeum represents the passion, the spirit and the zeal of today’s youth. MITians believe that every individual is special, capable and unique. So they try to draw out the talented musician, gorgeous dancer or eloquent speaker among the students of MIT. MITians breathe in a new meaning to enthusiasm and redefine talent. they do RE-INVENT PASSION. [1]

Prominent alumni of this institute include Honorable President Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, Sujatha & K B Chandrashekhar (founder of jamcracker.com & exodus.com ,who not surprisingly happens to be an electronics graduate). The annual festival of the institute is called Mitafest. Each department has its own festival, in addition to the musical festivals Sivaranjani. [1]

MIT has the unique practice of 'T-series'. This is a mentorship system and the word is said to have originated from the term Technocrat. Each new 'technocrat' of the institute is assigned to a mentor from the previous batch. He / she also inherits the complete set of 'T-seniors'f rom this mentor. Mentorship activities span whole gammit of student activities starting from passing on books up to job interview preparation tips. This system creates a sense of bonding and gives a unique family atmoshpere to MIT. [1]
