The NITT was started as a co-operative venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964 with a view to catering to the needs of man-power in technology for the country. The college has been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. Because of this rich experience, this institution was granted Deemed University Status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Govt. of India in the year 2003 and renamed as National Institute of Technology. NITT was registered under Societies Registration Act XXVII of 1975.[1]

The Chairman, Mr. R. Seshasayee of Ashok Leyland Ltd. was elected to office in 2005 and the Director of NITT is Prof. M. Chidambaram from 2005. Presently the institute is undergoing an accelerated growth phase through the World Bank funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme.[1]

The vision of NITT is to contribute to India and the World through excellence in scientific and technical education; to serve as a valuable resource for industry and society; and increase the human values and sustain the heritage of India. The values include Academic integrity and Accountability, Equality, Social Relevance, Intellectual Excellence and Creativity, and Entrepreneurship. Its misson is:

* To promote academic growth by offering state-of-the-art undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes.[1]
* To generate new knowledge by engaging in cutting-edge research.[1]
* To identify, based on an informed perception of Indian, regional and global needs, areas of specialization upon which the Institute can concentrate.[1]
* To undertake collaborative projects which offer opportunities for long-term interaction with academia and industry.[1]
* To develop human potential to its fullest extent of intellectual capability.[1]
