The town of San Fernando was named after Fernando III, King of Castille and Leon, canonized in 1671. The parish was founded in 1754 and placed under the advocation of Our Lady of the Assumption. The present church is said to have been built in the early 18th century. However, the church was burnt in 1899 by the forces under Gen. Antonio Luna. Later, this was reconstructed only to be gutted by a big fire in1939. The present church was reconstructed after World War II by Architect Fernando Ocampo.
