  • History & Memorable Moments

In 1998, the school was rocked by a student riot that was featured on major news networks such as CNN and Fox News. The incident was supposed to be a student protest against strict administrative changes such as student newspaper limitations and an off-campus lunch ban. The event became disorganized and eventually resulted in outright student rebellion. As a result of the incident, Principal Carroll Williams was fired. Mr. Turner, the new school principal, was welcomed with great fanfare. He has since also left the school. Today, Dr. Soffian, leads the school. Despite the turmoil, Norland alumni continue to thrive. Many of them have attended state universities such as the University of Florida, Florida A&M University, Florida International University, University of Miami, Florida State University and more. Some of them have attended Ivy League institutions such as Princeton, Harvard, and Brown. Others are aspiring actresses and musicians. You may even find that some alumni are professional athletes, especially since Norland won the 2002 Florida 6A Football Championship. This school was given a grade of "F" by the Florida Department of Education in 2006-2007. In 2005-2006, this school received a "D". In 2004-2005, this school received a "D". Norland overall rating is 2 (10 being the highest, 1 being the lowest). [1]
