Midway High School is the only high school in Midway Independent School District of the Waco, Texas area. Although the school is located in southwestern Waco, most students live in the suburbs of Woodway and Hewitt. Until 2002, Midway High School was located on Hewitt Drive in Hewitt. The newly constructed building is a few thousand feet away, in the city limits of Waco. The previous high school is now used as Midway Middle School. [1]

Midway is classified as 4A, the state's second biggest size, by the University Interscholastic League for athletic and academic competitions. Midway has 1900 students enrolled as of the end of the 2006-2007 school year. The ethnicity breakdown of Midway is: 78.6% White, 10.2% Hispanic, 7.5% African American, 3.2% Asian, and 0.4% Native American. Midway's school colors are red and blue and its mascot is the panther. Pete Rusek was recently elected to the President of the Midway ISD School Board. Newly-appointed schoolboard members include Tom Pagel and Bobby Deaton. [1]

Midway High School, and its late superintendent M.T. Rice, were known as pioneers in the development of girl's basketball in the state. The M.T. Rice Holiday Tournament, which features elite boys and girls teams from across the state and country, is one of the oldest and largest basketball tournaments in the state. Under the direction of legendary coach Reggie Davis, Midway won the 4A State girls's basketball championship in 1994. Davis is one of the few coaches in Texas history to lead both a boys team (The Midway Boys in 1973) and a girls team (on multiple occasions) to the state tournament. Midway High School also has the number one volleyball team in the state of Texas for the 4A division. Midway was rated academically acceptable by the TEA based on the 2007 TAKS results. Notable Alumni: Zach Duke, 2001 graduate from Clifton, Texas, pitcher for Pittsburgh Pirates; Casey Fossum, 1996 graduate, pitcher for San Diego Padres. [1]
