Government College of Engineering, Tirunelveli was started in October 1981 to cater the needs of the people of this region. Till then the youth of the southern district had to go to Madurai and places farther away to pursue their engineering studies. Thus, with the starting of this college, one of the long felt expectations of the people of this area came to be fulfilled. ^[1]

This institution is ideally located in an extent of about 23 hectares. It is about 2 km from New Tirunelveli Bus Stand and 8 km from Tirunelveli Junction Bus Stand. The college campus lies on the Tirunelveli - Tiruvandrum national highway. ^[1]

At its inception, the college admitted students for 3 undergraduate branches, namely Civil,Mechanical and Electronics and communication Engineering. Electrical and Electronics Engineering branch was introduced during the academic year 1986-1987. Further, Computer Science and Engineering branch has been offered since the academic year 1989-90. A Post-graduate course (M.E Degree) in Computer Science and Engineering was started during 1994-'95. Part-time B.E. Degree courses are offered in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering. ^[1]

The College has a sound infrastructure with well equipped Laboratories, Workshops, Computer centre,Library and Staff. ^[1]

This institution is affiliated to the Anna University with effect from 31-12-2001. The following self-supporting courses are offered in this college: M.E Computer Science and Engineering, M.E Engineering Design, M.E. Power Electronics and Drives, M.E. Structural Engineering and M.E. Applied Electronics. The college has been recognized as Zonal office for the conduct of Anna university examinations/Central Valuation for 24 colleges in the southern region. The college has been chosen as one of the four centers to issue eligiblity certificates on behalf of the Registrar, Anna University. And to cap it all the college has been granted recognition by the Anna university as a Regional Centre for Ph.D. and M.S. Programmes. ^[1]

All the departments of this college function in separate buildings. There are 5 student hostels, 3 for men and 2 for women. Residential Quarters for the staff are available within the college premises. Thus the college has made fast progress in many respects. one looks forward to seeing this college grow into an institution of eminence. ^[1]
