St. Xavier's College is located in Kolkata, India, and is named after St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit saint of the 16th century, who travelled to India. The College was founded by the Jesuits (the Society of Jesus), a Christian religious group started by Saint Ignatius of Loyola in 1540. Since its inception, the Jesuits have specialised in the field of education, among other things, and were even called the "school-masters of Europe" at one time. [1]

The Jesuits have established many colleges named after St. Francis Xavier in various parts of India. The best known ones are in Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai. St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, was affiliated to the University of Calcutta and has been recenly granted autonomy. It is located in Park Street and very well known for its science, economics, commerce and English faculty. The commerce department conducts its classes in the morning, so that the students are done with classes by 10 am and normally work during the day. The science and arts department conducts their classes during the day. The college has two main hostels, the Christian and the Hindu hostels. The Christian hostel is inside the college compound. [1]

It is very well suited for those pursuing other professional certifications like chartered accountants and cost accountants. It is known for its excellent faculties, infrastructure and strong sense of discipline. [1]

The college motto is "Nihil Ultra," Latin for "Nothing Beyond." Its alumni, as well as the students, call themselves Xaverians. The college fest is a three-day event known as Xavotsav, usually taking place between the 19th and 23rd of December. [1]
