When a barrage of mysterious anti-referendum proposal fliers were circulated throughout Oak Lawn just days before voters went to the April 2007 polls, District 229 Supt. Jim Briscoe vowed to expose the people involved in the canvassing. Briscoe thought Oak Lawn Trustee Bob Streit -- one of the referendum measure's most public critics in years past -- was behind the campaign, so he gave him a ring. [1]

When Briscoe's phone call rolled into voicemail at Streit's office April 13, the school official unloaded on the trustee -- threatening to boycott Streit's Seal-Tite Roofing and Construction Co. and other businesses that he suspects were behind the unsuccessful campaign to stop a tax rate increase. "He said he was organizing an angry group of 250 parents," said Streit, who turned the message over to the Cook County state's attorney's office and lodged an intimidation complaint. State's attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin confirmed the status of the complaint on Friday, April 27th 2007. Formal charges are expected to follow in the following weeks. [1]

"It sounded like he incited a group with a mob mentality," said Streit, who didn't file a complaint with local police. "I actually thought that maybe they were on their way over." Briscoe called two subsequent times, both apologizing and demanding a meeting, according to Streit, who shopped the story around to some local television news departments before Fox News agreed to air the story Wednesday. [1]

Voters approved the referendum measure, but controversy has left both pro and con groups angry and discouraged. [1]
