    • Looking at the results of the racing over the last year, its hard to believe that Maria has never won this event. This year, she took a clean sweep of the event, winning every race with plenty of time to spare. The rest of the field was composed of newer Hobie sailors and students, who took a lot of coaching during the event, from generally more experienced crew. It was gratifying to see them out there though, Alannah Symes sailing with her dad, achel Van Klaveren also racing with her father, Our new member Denize "The Turk" Sasal coaching, Karla Kramer and Peter Capotosto who came second, and Khanna Verzosa and Joe Hagedorn, who placed third. The best part, was that inspite of the rain, and the occasional gusty conditions which raised veryones adrenaline levels, everybody had a great time, and came home with lots of lessons and stories to tell. And thats what sailing is all about.
    • Vangie Placios Memorial Award: This year, this trophy, for being the woman in TLYC's eyes, who has done the most to promote the sport, went to Maria Vidoeira. Previously, it has been won by Carol Pablo, and Elle Singson. Aside from A great performance on the water over the past year, Maria has promoted the Philippines as a sailing destination at international competitions, increased awareness through the media, physically brought new people out on the water, and is the Director in charge of the Philippine Hobie Travelers series. Congratulations Maria!

Traveller Series

  • 2008-2009 Schedule
    • 20 / 21 September - Taali - Batangas (Winner: Monchu & Diego)
      • The TRAVELLERS SERIES kicked off last weekend with a FUNtastic event at Tali Beach dubbed the Taali Regatta. Inspite of three threatening weather disturbances surrounding the country a total of six (6) brave hearted teams made their way to Nasugbu on Friday evening for the Pre-Party and early registration. Their optimism was rewarded with better than expected wind and weather as it turned out to be a beautiful sailing weekend. Everything went like clockwork including the arrival of the southwest Habagat winds at 9:30am sharp, just as Race Officer Jerry Rollin was conducting the skippers briefing in the Tali Gazebo. Saturday’s races were a combination of windward/leeward and round-the-island courses, the latter being a Tali to Kawayan Cove race rounding Twin Islands. The morning breeze of 4-5 knots picked up to 8 knots as the teams ‘beat’ up to Twin Islands, just skirting the jagged reef on its northeast side. The fun started as the sailors ‘reached’ toward Kawayan Cove while surfing the 3ft swells and clocking speeds of 14 knots. The Hobie 16s were joined by Tutu Tango, Jun Villanueva’s 42’ Fountaine Pajot and Sweet Pea, Sergio Giorgetti’s 36’ Hunter, both of which acted as our support and family boats. The racers were greeted in the beach with a cold calamansi juice upon arrival at the secluded horse shoe shaped cove, and treated to a sumptious seafood and pork bbq lunch at the Beach Pavilion, with lots of fruits and other local favorites for desert. After a relaxing break the regatta resumed with another race back to Tali also rounding Twin Islands, but not before the breaking surf and shifty wind gave some sailors trouble launching their hobies’ off the beach.
      • After tough and very competitive battles on the water the sailors converged for a Beach Party and Pot Luck Dinner on Saturday night. Over 30 sailors, family members and friends attended the hopping party - which didn’t seem to end. The last stragglers were seen crawling home at close to 2am! But that didn’t deter RO Jerry Rollin to start off Sunday’s races promptly at 9am. The day looked promising at first but then the first race had to be shortened after the winds shifted and moderated to less than 4 knots. Then, just as the buoys had been relocated for the second race of the day, the wind came back with a vengeance and continued to strengthen all morning causing even bigger swells. Races were hotly contested with the leader position changing with every lap. Finally, with boat speeds clocked up to 17 knots, the last race of the day ended at 12:30pm, perfectly timed to enjoy a delicious Mongolian lunch organized at Los Balcones, with a panoramic view of the weekend’s race course.
      • When the spray settled after a total of 9 races over 2 days, the victors were Team Rayomarine - Diego & Monchu in 1st Place, followed closely by Maria & Bing in 2nd, and The Jacksons – Mike & Germaine in 3rd. Special mentions for some great sailing by team Huachinango – Roman & Chris and Team Kiwi – Paul & Brent. Celebrations continued on after lunch with flowing Tinto de Verano (summer wine) and beer to wash down delicious cookies brought by Ed and Bernadette Gallego who flew in all the way from Cebu with their son Martin and niece Katie. It is worth mentioning that Katie crewed for Ed after having only sailed once before in New York. I’m sure we’ll get to see more of her in the future, specially during the upcoming Cebu regatta in Alcoy, now rescheduled to Nov. 1 & 2 to coincide with the All Souls/Saints Day holidays.
      • All in all it was a very successful start for this year’s Traveller’s Series. Look out for great action shots of the races that we will post soon.
