  • Overview

Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park is a 17acre state park and registered National Historic Landmark on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. It marks the short Russian history on the island. A fort was designed by the Russians after an agreement was made between the ruling chief of Kauai, Alii nui Kaumualii, and the Kingdom of Hawaii under Kamehameha I and it was understood that this would be possible with the help of Tsar Alexander I of Russia. The fort, Russian Fort Elizabeth or Paulaula o Hipo, was built by Hawaiians beginning in 1816 and finished one year later. The Russians were expelled from Kauai when it was discovered that they did not have the support of the Tsar.Russian Fort Elizabeth lies on the eastern bank of the Waimea River at the river's mouth. The site is accessible from Kaumualii Highway.Facilities at the park include an interpretive walking path, and restrooms. A brochure with details of the site is available for a self-guided interpretive tour. Visitors to this site can enjoy exploring the remains of the fort, viewing scenery, photography and historical interpretation. The climate on Kauai varies more with the terrain than the seasons. Generally, the coastal temperature changes little throughout the year. [1]
