A group of distinguished Brooklyn businessmen drew up a charter on May 17, 1853, to establish a school for young men. In 1854, the Brooklyn Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute was chartered and moved into its first home at 99 Livingston Street. In 1855, the school opened its doors September 10 to 265 young men ages nine to 17. From 1889 to 1973 it was known as "Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn". In 1973, Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn merged with New York University’s School of Engineering and Science to form Polytechnic Institute of New York. In 1985, the school name was changed to Polytechnic University. [1]
