HEROES: SYA Catholic Bible Study

Before attending the first session of Heroes: Bible study; I did not know that a TV series entitled "Heroes" ever existed. After attending several sessions, I was intrigued why Jolly entitled Fr. Toys Bible study Heroes. I was more intrigued when Patrick mentioned that Jolly asked him to purchase the whole Heroes: Season 2 in the USA.

So parallel to attending the Bible studies, I also watched Heroes in TV. In the TV series, each character had their own special talents and each had their own understanding of how to "Save the World." Some of them had the distorted idea that bombing the whole of New York or spreading a deadly mutated virus and killing mankind will create a new beginning and "Save the World." While others, the good guys made it a point to stop the bomb from exploding or the virus from spreading.

After attending several Bible classes, I have learned that just like the TV series, the Bible is also filled with countless Bible Heroes whose aim is to "Save the world". There are the stories of Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Moses, The Prophets, up to Joseph, Mary and of course Jesus Christ. Just like the TV series each Bible Heroes life is intertwined with one another and affects one another. Even spectators like us.

While attending, I have also seen a number of "Heroes" during the Bible class. There were the 3 Grandmas which often reminded me of the Golden Girls comedy TV show. The Jolly Family (Jolly's Family,) The Tomacruzes. And lately Jamie who had to attend the "LIVE VERSION" since she had difficulty downloading the recorded version online.

But what struck me was, last last Thursday night's "Hero" wherein; I saw two Mothers and Sons attend. A quiet pair and an outspoken pair. The outspoken mother "ANGRILY" said that they did not want her to attend the Bible studies. Curiously I asked her, "Who didn't want you to attend?" She said the girl in the Church Office said that the Bible class was only for Single Young Adults. At first I thought that she was just joking. But soon I realized that she was dead serious because I sensed her deep hunger for her to hear the Word. I smiled and assured her that it was an honest mistake since SYA has another Thursday group which is really meant for Single Young Adults. His good looking son then introduced himself and told me that he regularly attends Bible studies in Victory Christian Fellowship in The Fort. He wanted to see the Heroes: Bible study. He said he attended last weeks session and liked it so much that this week he invited his mom to come along. And that made him my hero for that day.

While attending, I also learned that just like in the TV series; all of of us are looking for "answers" and meaning in our lives. It can be as cryptic as 08-08-08 or 12-08 or BFF and BFFN. Or as simple as finding someone we can grow old with. The good news is unlike in the TV series where the Heroes have to discover the answers on their own, God already gave the answers in the Bible and in our Church and we can discover the answers together.

And oftentimes, we just need to be present for God to give us His answers.
