- Overview
The Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) is an intergovernmental and international organization, aiming at sustainable socio-economic uplift of the developing countries through useful applications of science and technology. Representatives from 36 developing countries met on 4-5th Oct 1994 in Islamabad and agreed to establish "The Commission", a high forum represented by heads of governments. Currently COMSATS has 21 countries as its members located in the three continents of the globe (Asia, Africa and Latin America). Realizing that working collaborations are an essential ingredient for accomplishing socio-economic development of the third world, COMSATS strives to cultivate linkages with prominent players at the international, regional and national level in order to integrate the development efforts. COMSATS has been working closely with agencies/organizations like TWAS/TWNSO, ICIMOD, IDRC, UNIDO, IAEA, COMSTECH, UNESCO, ISESCO, Lead Pakistan and various academic institutions in the member countries. The honorable Pakistani scientist Dr. Abdus Salam (Only Pakistani Muslim Nobel Laureate) was one of the founder and person who proposed the idea of establishment of such institute which is an honor for COMSATS.
