Irvine High School opened its doors in 1976, with its first graduating class in 1979. One of four comprehensive high schools in the Irvine Unified School District, it supports a student enrollment of approximately 2,100. It was named a California Distinguished School by the State Board of Education and received the highest award for Excellence in Education from the U. S. Department of Education. Additionally, in 2000 and again in 2006, the Accrediting Commission for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges awarded Irvine High a full six-year term of accreditation under the Pursuing Excellence format. Irvine High School has been named a “Signature Gold” school as well. [1]

The campus itself is notable for its bizarre architecture. Designed in the Brutalist style and built largely of cinder block, it features distinctive "stamped" concrete panels with impressionistic designs. The shapes and angles of everything on the campus are based on the hexagon, and an imperfect line of symmetry can be drawn vertically through the much of the campus. [1]

Also, in recent years, the school has developed and emphasized an acronym of values:

  • Integrity: firm adherence to a code of moral values; honesty; incorruptibility.
  • Honor Yourself & Others: a keen sense of ethical conduct toward one's self and to the whole community.
  • Social Responsibility: acting with empathy and concern towards family, school and the global community. [1]
