  • Overview

Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park is a state park located in Shasta County, California. The state acquired the land from the Horr Ranch in 1975. This park is unique in the California state park system because public access is by boat only. There are 3 campgrounds: Horr Pond, Crystal Springs and Ja-She, each with three primitive campsites, although one site is overgrown from little use. Brilliant aqua bays and tree studded islets only a few yards long dot the shoreline. The size of the park is four miles in length, one mile or less wide and has over 13 mi. of shoreline. At the mouth of the springs, there are remains of Indian fish traps, low rock walls enclosing shallow water that were used to trap sucker and trout by the Ahjumawi. Of the park's 6,000 acres (24km²), more than two-thirds of the area is covered by recent (two to five thousand years) lava flows including vast areas of jagged black basalt.[1]
