NWSA opened its doors to high school students in grades 10-12 in August 1987. It was the successor to P.A.V.A.C. (Performing and Visual Arts Center), a magnet school program for high school students, under the artistic direction of Richard A. Klein, the former principal of the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts at New York City's Lincoln Center from 1969 to 1987, which New World is modeled after, and the academic direction of founding Principal Alan Weiss. New World has the distinction of also being known as the Fame School of the South.^[1]

In 2006, Ryan San Juan also known as "RyaZila" was accepted into the instrumental music department on Bb clarinet. Then later kicked out of New World the 28th of January 2008 due to not having the required 2.0 GPA every semester in his acadimic classes and was already on extended probation. He had no type of warning besides 4 weeks in advance which was just a reminder to keep up your grades. He was called in to his consolers office 15 minutes before going to his music class on Monday January 28, was then told that it was his last day and then went off to Wind ensemble, a private lesson, and music theory for one last time at New World. They didn't give him one more day to stay to say goodbye to everyone or turn in books and etc. The next day he went to his home school Barbara Goleman Senior High School but wasn't allowed to begin the day of due to not having uniform, therefore he started on Wednesday January 30th. He was a very talented clarinet player, it was a shame for New World to lose him, but if they really wanted him, they could have kept him for another semester so he can bring up his grades therefore being able to stay the his remianing years. But really had no chance of staying any longer seeing how rumors went around how some teachers and his consoler did not like him, and as rumors went his consoler made sure he didn't get any more chances.^[1]
