Central Visual and Performing Arts High School is a magnet high school in St. Louis, Missouri. As the name implies, Central VPA promotes artistic activity within its student body by offering a variety of art classes such as guitar study, creative writing, music composition, animation, video game design, visual art, dance, photography, choir, harp, brass, television, orchestra, MIDI programming, radio, woodwind, and fashion design. Located at 3125 S. Kingshighway Blvd. at Arsenal, Central now occupies a building formerly known as Southwest High School. Currently, Amy Phillips is the new principal. [1]
Central notoriously made a local news splash in the 2004-2005 school year with the release of a student produced yearbook. The yearbook, created by the school's 2004-2005 National Honors Society, had some photos of students displaying 'gang sign' and some objectionable captions. [1]
As of the 2010-2011 school year, Central VPA began no longer offering programs in television or radio. In addition, Central discontinued its sports program in order to use the money to help fund the remaining arts programs. [1]
