DeVry Chicago opened in 1931 as the DeForest Training School, named after Lee DeForest, a colleague and friend of founder Herman A. DeVry. Since then the company has undergone a number of name changes. In 1966 a controlling share was acquired by the Education Group of Bell and Howell, which then sold that share to the Keller Graduate School of Management in 1987. DeVry acquired Becker Professional Review in 1996, Ross University in 2003, and the Deaconess College of Nursing in 2005. DeVry did not acquire rights to use the name "Deaconess College of Nursing", so it was renamed "Chamberlain" in 2006. [1]

Accreditation

DeVry University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association (NCA), 30 North LaSalle Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60602, www.ncahigherlearningcommission.org, 800/621-7440. NCA is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a recognized accrediting association.

The baccalaureate Electronics Engineering Technology (EET) programs at most U.S. locations, as well as the associate-level EET program in North Brunswick, are accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC of ABET), 111 Market Place, Baltimore, Maryland, 21202, 410/347-7700.

DeVry's Biomedical Engineering Technology (BMET) and Computer Engineering Technology* (CET) programs are relatively new; campus administrators will apply for TAC of ABET accreditation for these programs when their first classes graduate, as will administrators at newer DeVry sites for their TAC of ABET-eligible programs. Information on the status of TAC of ABET accreditation is available at each location. (The CET and EET programs at DeVry/Calgary, offered through the Phoenix campus, are not eligible for this accreditation.)

In the United States, current or prospective students may review information regarding accreditation, approval and licensing by contacting the campus president or the center director. NOTE: DeVry operates as DeVry Institute of Technology in New York. The Alpharetta and Tinley Park sites operate as branches of DeVry/Decatur and DeVry/Addison, respectively.
